Since the beginning of the year, we have completed two brand new tables, both based on existing designs. The first was made for architect Thomas Kligerman’s own residence in the US (Kligerman Architecture & Design). He specifically wanted to draw on the classic Drogo Refractory table for his kitchen but didn’t have the room to do so.
Working closely together with him, we developed a smaller, lighter table appropriately scaled for his space whilst maintaining the original details of pegged joints, block feet and column legs.
Tom specified the wide lower stretcher partly to allow for chairs sitting under the skirt and partly to use it for placing things on. I’m not sure he had in mind the excellent use it is now being put to.
The second was a brand-new variant on our Circlebase table. The client in the South of England wanted a custom table to go into an octagonal extension, designed by Lutyens, to an earlier house. The octagon room was to be used for informal dining and we were asked to create an octagonal table to match the shape of the room (it actually has two short sides and six long).
The client specified the base of the Circlebase table which we customised to echo the mix of short and long sides of the top. The client requested that we lime the Oak and this really brings out the grain as seen in these details.
