Spiderback Chair

Presumably inspired by Hepplewhite, Lutyens used the spiderback motif for chairs in several of his buildings, most notably The Country Life Building (1904), 120 Pall Mall (1928) and Campion Hall, Oxford (1934). It also appears in sketches Lutyens made for an imaginary house for a certain Captain Day, with whom he made friends during one of his many sea voyages. Reproduced here, it depicts a set of spiderback chairs, painted blue, around a table in the Captain's 'dining saloon'.

This chair is constructed from the drawings that Lutyens made for 120 Pall Mall, dated 1931
