Occasional Table
This table was designed by Sir Edwin
Lutyens for Government House in New Delhi. It was
designed for a lobby in the north-west wing of the
building.
Comprising a triangular base structure, the top of
the table swivels to the point at which its three leaves
rest on the points of the triangle below. The design
is a highly complex one and structurally very difficult
to achieve. The result is a sophisticated piece that
explores the relationship between circle, square and
triangle.
The table is constructed from Lutyen's
original drawings. That illustrated is made from walnut
and has been waxed, but other timbers and finishes
may be used.
