Pall Mall Writing chair

This chair was made for 120 Pall Mall in 1931. The building was designed as the showroom and offices of Crane Bennett Limited, a manufacturer of top quality baths and plumbing, and, as such, was one of Lutyens's relatively few ventures into designing commercial premises.

The unusual shape, the curved arms and the use of the cane back are Lutyens at his most original. He seems to have liked the design himself, as a very similar chair was designed for the Viceroy's private office in New Delhi in 1928.

The chair illustrated is made from walnut and the seat is covered in a red calf skin and studded with chromium plated nails. It is constructed from Lutyens's original drawings and made by hand using traditional methods and materials thoughout.
